There are about 5,000 potato varieties worldwide – 3000 of them are found in the Andes alone, mainly in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, and Colombia; apart from the 5,000 cultivated varieties, there are about 200 wild species and subspecies, many of which can be cross-bred with cultivated varieties.
Worldwide, 376,875,686 tonnes of potato is produced per year – China is the largest potato producer in the world with 99,122,420 tonnes and India comes second with 43,770,000 tonnes yearly production.
